Zagoria guide

By Anonymous - Posted on 15 June 2008

Does anyone know of an English language walking guide book for Zagoria? We are planning a two week holiday and want to do day walkks from 10 to 20 km including the Vikos gorge and the Aoos gorge. We are trying to decide whether to book a fly-drive package with Travelux from UK where we would spend one week based at Megalo Papingo and one at Ano Pedina. Or should we just book a flight and a car so we have the chance to stay in other villages too?

Most important - is there a walking book that describes day walks in the area (though we would not mind the occosional night or two at mountain refuges en route)?

Unfortunatelly there is not such a guide book for the Pindos mountains.
The Lonely Planet's Hiking in Greece guidebook , allthough it is old and in many facts outdated is still a good reference.
There is also good maps nowdays in 1:50000 scale that can be very usefull for self guided tours. By the way Sherpa organizes the best self guided tour in the area. Zagori and Gkamila mountain. Travelux fly and drive programs are ok but I believe they limit you a lot if you want to take the most of the area by walking most of the classic routes.
If you have some experience in hill walking then I suggest you make ur own itinerary and organize a walking tour on your with no need of tour operators. On this forum I have posted many times in the past walking routes and itineraries, hope it will help you, if you need further assistance we re here to help you, you can also send a PM by filling the contact form.

There are two books available from Amazon by Tim Salmon, The Mountains of Greece. A Walkers Guide and The Mountains of Greece The Pindos Mountains.
